All right, family, let's get into it today.

Speaker 1:

Today, I want to talk about embracing new genres of music. I think that it's nothing wrong with having a style of music or a couple of styles of music that you embrace, but I think that you should really be in a place to explore and to really see what other genres have to offer. And that's really why I am talking about this, because I believe that each genre has something to offer, even even orchestral music All right, um it. It has something to offer you that you can take and add to your process as you are creating your next single, your EP or your full length album. Each genre has great tools in it for you to acquire use for yourself and for your own music.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to give a few examples. Number one is country music. For me, it's you know it's. It is the lyric writing. It's writing, it's, it's just. It blows me away. The storytelling, it, um. That's what really draws me to country music. Obviously, it's the singing as well, but I'll get to that in a minute. Um, but it is for the top thing. The top thing for me, the country music is um, the lyric writing and um, that big. I love the big sound of country music. I absolutely love what the engineers are doing and how they create that huge sound, the acoustic sound, with the musicians. It's amazing. So for me, that's one of the top reasons. That's not the only reason, but that's one of the top reasons.

Speaker 1:

Next, gospel music, gospel music. For me, it's so many reasons, but one of the top reasons is Next, gospel music, gospel music. For me, it's so many reasons, but one of the top reasons is the vocal ability. All right, the vocal ability, I'll say that. And the musicianship. It's completely out of this world. You'll find some of the greatest singers and instrumentalists in the genre of gospel music, absolutely so please do not shy away from that. It is absolutely amazing.

Speaker 1:

The next genre I want to talk about is jazz, and for a couple of reasons the writing, the vocal ability and the musicianship. It has so much to offer. I know that for some people they don't understand it, but it takes time to understand. When I first started listening to jazz music, it took me some time to really understand what was going on um it was. It was absolutely new uh to me. You can also go on youtube and uh look up a video that can help you explain what's happening in the music, what the form is, the chords, what's happening. So that's another way that you can grow faster. But this is what this genre really offers, and more, but just three things that stick out to me.

Speaker 1:

The next genre I want to talk about is classical music, orchestral music. For me, it is the musicianship, of course, the writing Um the ideas, the melody, counter melodies you have. You know the, the um, the harmony, um so many things that are going on in orchestral music. So many ideas you know um, especially if you are a composer, you know, or a songwriter, you know what I mean. Like, this is a great, great uh genre for you that I think that you should, that you should listen to. I really do Um.

Speaker 1:

The next one I want to talk about is pop. You know pop for me. I listened to pop for, not really for the singing, but I listened to pop for the ideas um the musical ideas, the different melodies, the different sounds that are being used um the different um mixing techniques that are used. For those of us who are mixing and mastering engineers, I listen, you know, for you know these ideas, and one of the top producers that come to mind as it pertains to this is Timbaland. So you know he is one of the he's one of the greatest producers ever, and so I look to this genre for great ideas, for different form ideas. When I say form, I'm talking about, you know, the form of the song intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, things of that nature. That's what I mean by a form. You know I listen to how they shake things up, you um different instrumentations, different sounds that they use.

Speaker 1:

Like I said before, you know so many ideas, and so the point I want to bring across to you is that don't be afraid um to to you know, really dive into these other genres, because all of them have something to offer you. All of them I'm not saying you have to fall in love with them, the genre that is but all of them, I believe, have something to offer you. All of them I'm not saying you have to fall in love with them, the genre that is but all of them, I believe, have something to offer you, something that you can take, um, that will make you a better artist, make you a better music producer, um, make you a better uh engineer. You know, just all around uh artists Uh, I really, or just just all around.

Speaker 1:

As far as your process is concerned, you will grow, uh so much more, and I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to, um, I'm going to give some examples, not in this episode, but in in episodes to come. I'm going to give examples, I'm going to have songs in different genres and I'm going to point some things out that I think will be beneficial, uh, for you. I know I won't be able to play them, but I will be going to point some things out that I think will be beneficial for you. I know I won't be able to play them, but I will be able to point out what's happening at different time frames, whether it's 40 seconds or a minute and five seconds, whatever it is. I'm going to tell you the time, the times to go listen, listen for or go listen at those specific times in the song so that you can hear what I'm talking about and hear the different ideas, and I'm going to do this across genres so you guys can really understand that there's so much there. There's so much that you can learn. Everything is not going to come through you taking a class or asking someone these are great ways to learn but sometimes it's just going to come through you just listening to the music and knowing how to listen. I think I should do an episode on that. I think I did an episode on listening before, but I think it's worth revisiting. Uh, listening to. It's worth revisiting, uh, how to listen to music and how to go about you know, extracting uh, uh, great tools from what you're listening to.
