Toni King Season 1 Episode 29

Send us a text

Embark on a harmonic quest with us as we unravel the intricate tapestry of vocal arranging and its profound impact on music production. The finesse of vocal placement is not just an art but a storytelling tool that, when mastered, transforms a piece into a resonating narrative. We peel back the layers to expose the truth behind church-trained vocalists taking to the studio and the ever-present need for singers to polish their skills. Prepare to be inspired by vocal juggernauts like Brandy, Tori Kelly, JoJo, Daryl Walls, and Kim Burrell, whose command of melody, rhythm, and harmony exemplifies musicianship mastery.

As we foster a community of empowered artists, Keys Production and our music school are the nurturing ground for your creative aspirations. We extend our hand to those seeking guidance in melody and harmony crafting, offering a beacon of support in your musical journey. The episode wraps with a powerful affirmation on the potency of mindset—a shift in perspective that can turn the tide of your day. Thank you for lending your ear to our creative chorus; may it leave an echo of motivation and a blueprint for making your indelible musical mark.

So please check it out. And if you want to learn more about me, there's a link for you to learn more about me.

Speaker 1:

Alright, so let's dive in here and today I want to talk about vocal arranging. I want to talk about vocal arranging and I think that this is a very important part of the production process. You know it's so essential. Of course, you know you have people that can sing alright, you have people that can sing very well, but vocal arranging is still necessary. You may have a great tone, you may have some things you do here and there as far as runs is concerned, but it's something about organizing what you're doing and organizing your ideas and knowing where to place them. This is very, very important. I think church is one of the greatest places, I think, to develop your gift, but it also can cause you to, you know, not see the full picture. Alright, some people think, because they can sing well in that setting, that sometimes they're better than what they are, you know, and so I think that we need to take a step further and obviously hone your skills and work on your vocal ability.

Speaker 1:

But when you're working on a song, think about how you want to tell the story vocally phrase-wise, melody, you know, rhythm, you know all these things are super important to bring across a great product, and so I want to name, you know just a few people. I'm going to name just a few people that I think that will be great for you to go and listen to so that you can you know, if you haven't already begin to think like this and get to think about how you want your melody and I'm thinking about the lead. But you can think about this as far as the lead, atlips, fill-ins, you know, backgrounds, unison lines, how you want these things to be sung. Alright, so I'll just give a quick list. I'm going to put at the top of this list Brandy. I'm going to put at the very top of this list Brandy. You know they've called her the Vocal Bible and you know she is just phenomenal, her choices, how smooth her voice is, you know, and she's been doing it for a long time.

Speaker 1:

So definitely, I would go check out Brandi, you know, and just what she's doing, you know on her records. Full Moon is one of her big records, a record that a lot of just people liked anyway, in general, but also because of you know vocally what she's doing on that record. Yeah, go check out. You know Full Moon, brandi, you know, and any other projects that she has. I think it'd be a great person to constantly listen to.

Speaker 1:

The next person is Tori Kelly. You know, one of the albums that I like of her is the Christmas album. I like her other stuff, but the Christmas album, you know, it's just a phenomenal her, you know, her album is phenomenal record and what she's doing on that one, those records are, just, you know, phenomenal out of this world. And so she's another one. That is just, you know her. And then I want to mention JoJo. Well, if you know who JoJo is, but Tori Kelly and JoJo, they kind of sound similar to me. They're still still different, but they, you know, they have the tone and certain things they do sounds, you know, they, they. I won't say they sound the same, but but they remind me of each other. Let me say that because I want to respect their individuality. So, yeah, jojo, tori Kelly, crazy right.

Speaker 1:

So also Daryl Walz, and if you know who that is, but Daryl Walz is a he's, you know, part of the Walz group. He's the oldest, I think. I don't know if he's the oldest because they have a lot of siblings, but he might be the oldest, you know. But anyway, daryl Walz is a phenomenal artist, vocalist. He has a lot of stuff on YouTube, not a cover she's done and albums with the group, the Walz group. The last record, I believe, was the one with Warren Campbell on my block, the record label, and so, yeah, go check out that record. You know what I mean. And all of them on, all of them are just phenomenal. But go check out Daryl Walz stuff. He's just, you know, the guy's inspired.

Speaker 1:

The next is Kimberl. If you're a vocalist, you definitely know who this is. She's been around for so long now and she's been blazing records her own and others for so long and for years now. So please go and check out. Go and check out Kimberl's, check out her albums, check out things she's doing on YouTube. You know there's so much to learn, there so much to learn, so please go check it out.

Speaker 1:

The next one that I want to mention is Melvin Crispell. He was one of the contestants on Sunday Best. He has his own records out and the man is just phenomenal. He's just phenomenal artist, phenomenal vocalist and he is just out of this world. Definitely go check him out because you know his choices and things that he's doing.

Speaker 1:

I'll give you a song. Up front there's this artist other artists called Jason Nelson, another phenomenal vocalist, but he's on a song by Jason Nelson called Yahways very new, new. It's on iTunes and there's a video on YouTube where you can actually see this in action. Go check out both of these gentlemen, melvin Crispell and Jason Nelson. You will not be sorry.

Speaker 1:

You will learn so much and just all of these vocalists that I have mentioned, the control that they have. It's just out of this world and also takes work, and don't think that it's just going to fall on you. It takes work, you know, to get to that level. So if you guys, you know, definitely want me to to talk more about these artists and their albums and different things that nature, please let me know. But these are some great artists, the great artists that you can go listen to right now and you can learn so much from. So please, please, please, go and check them out, man, and continue to learn and grow. All right. So thank you so much for checking this out.
