Recomposing the Symphony: The Courage to Revise and Refine Your Music
Every artist knows the thrill of creation, but what about the guts it takes to tear it down and rebuild? That's the focus of this week's Teach One Tuesday Podcast, where we dive into the art of refining your musical craft. We'll discuss why being open to changes in your work is not just beneficial, but essential. You'll get an earful of personal stories, like the time I upgraded my recording equipment and was blown away by how it revolutionized my production quality. There's a symphony of techniques we'll explore—from when to add that extra harmony to the precise art of stripping back elements for that crystal-clear sound.
We'll also hit the high notes on mixing and mastering, ensuring your final product doesn't just sound good to you, but resonates with your audience. And let's not forget the importance of honest critique; it's a tune you'll want to face, and I'll offer advice on how to sift through the noise and use feedback constructively. Whether you're laying down your first track or you're a virtuoso of the industry, this episode will fine-tune your approach to making music that stands out from the chorus. Join us for a candid and insightful session that could be the coda to your creative process as you know it.

Speaker 1:Let's get into that subject for today we're going to be talking about, you know, after the listening. So the last episode was about the listening party, listening party, and so today I want to get into, you know, making adjustments. Now I want to say to you that, you know, don't be married to every idea that you have or something that you've already laid down, because you should definitely be in the mindset of making adjustments on the song. There's been plenty of times where I brought my wife in and I had her listening to my song or what I had done already, and she, you know, sometimes it's not huge or something small Take something out, maybe, you know, lower the volume or something else, or something to that effect, so that it would give the room the space that it needs. So be ready to make adjustments, be ready to take some things out. There's nothing wrong with this stage Because remember the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is to put out your best product right, your best song, and to make sure that this song is a hit right. So there is a process to that. So, after you have, you know, had your loved ones, people who really care about you, listen to your music and, side note, have some people that's really going to tell you the truth. I'm not talking about grandma, them, who you know, they're just going to love it because you their baby. All right, I mean, that's cool, I understand that. But you want to get some people that's going to just going to really listen to the music and really give you feedback. It's in your best interest, all right, and I can't stress how important this is. It can be scary, you know. People listening to your work, people criticizing it, I totally understand, but I don't want you to miss out on this step and after that, please make adjustments on your song. You know whether and it doesn't have to be anything major, it doesn't have to be anything major Maybe you have to go back, maybe, you know, just put in some ad libs or just add some harmony somewhere, or take something out, you know, and it will make the difference. It will make the difference as far as you know, when, when you send yourself to get mixed or you're mixing it yourself, it will make the difference. Now I want to mention this Recently I had purchased a new mic.
Speaker 1:You know, for my, for my, you know for my workflow. I had a mic that I had. I can't remember exactly what it was. But I had a mic that I had for some years and it was just time it didn't record at the level that I wanted to record and so I went and got me a sure mic. So I got the S yeah SM7B sure, sm7b dynamic vocal microphone. I had to get it because I had to get something new and I'm telling, and I also got an eyeball, eyeball or something you put around the mic to kind of give you that kind of, to give you that basically, that studio sound is very controlled, all right, and ever since, you know, my wife purchased it for me, you know, hook me up and got me, you know, a microphone arm I think that's what you call this and everything so that I can record and have the quality. You know that I want that. I want it because, as some you may know, some you may not know, Depending on how your stuff is recorded, how well your music is recorded, it depends on how that's going to determine how good your mix is going to be.
Speaker 1:You have a slammer song, but if your stuff is not recorded correctly, it's not recorded well. The engineer is going to have to do a lot of work to deal with the imperfections and try to give you the best product that they can. For me, one of the things that I'm doing now is I edit my own vocals because the way that I sing, I do runs, I do different things All the time. They don't know how to edit that. They make weird choices if there needs to be any pitch correction.
Speaker 1:Now, the other thing I want to say too is that the pitch correction, because I work on my vocals, but in the past there was a lot that had to be done to correct that because, again, the mic that I was using then also I wasn't using plugins like I use now to kind of give me that sound that you would get when it's mixed. You have the reverb to have the echo, the compression, the siblings, all that packed into one. What I'm using for that is Xbox Pro, right, xbox Pro that I use. I put that on there. I'll bring up that plugin when I'm recording vocals so I can get that sound all right, and it has made a world of difference. So, plugin and the new mic has really changed things for me. I'm able to really hear, I'm able to really, for the most part, I won't have to use too much pitch correction or you either use a flex pitch or I forgot the plugin that I got that also you can use to correct your vocals. It's escaping me, but yeah, so I won't have to do too much of that because I'm able to really hear. I work on my vocals outside of recording, then I'm able to really hear and sing well, so I won't have to use too much pitch correction.
Speaker 1:Bandy who. So make sure that you are making those adjustments, and those are some of the adjustments I had to make so I can put forth the best product. All right, so do not be afraid to make changes, because it's for the best. You want to put your best foot forward and you will not regret either acquiring the equipment, having your loved ones listen to your product, making those adjustments. You will not regret those decisions. And so really holding on that step and I'm happy I can really lay out these steps for you guys, because it's really important I care that you really put out the best product for yourself and that you can really, you know, show forth your skills and people can really hear what you can really do. And it's pretty hard to do if you have subpar equipment and you don't know what steps to take, how to really put a song together, you know, really take your time and really do what you need to do so you can put the best product forth. You know, and that's what I want for you. So I want this one to be too long, so I really want to drop those knuckers for you. All right, I want to thank you so much for checking this out Once again.
