The Toni King Experience

Speaker 1:

Welcome back everyone to another great episode of teach one Tuesday Podcast, man. But before we get into my subject for today, let's get into that great theme music family. All right, all right, welcome back everyone. Welcome back to another great episode teach one Tuesday podcast. All right, before I get into my subject of one and carriage everyone to go and check out the links in the description, there's my business, very keys production in music school. There's my channel, youtube channel the Tony King Experience is a link tree link there for you to learn more about me. So many other great goodies there. We got a new project that's going to be dropping in December of this year Kingdom radio day two. For that also, my website should be there. But the link, the link tree link, has everything there. It's one link to that leads to a bunch of other links. All my information, my bio, everything is there. So go and check that out. All right, let's get into the subject for today. We're.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to be talking to producers, man, producers, and this is such a great, you know Subject you know to talk about. I've talked about listening before. But producers, you know, of course we have musicians that that when they listen to music, it listens, for you know melody, harmony and Rhythm and different things of that nature. But when a producer is listening to music, it's a totally it's not a. It's different experience. They may listen for those things if their ears are have been trained to hear those things.

Speaker 1:

But what I'm talking about is the different tricks and things that are being used in these records, man and these records, and I'm trying to find like a simple place to start, because there's so many juicy things you know that you can really hone in on, and one of those things I'll talk about. The first thing is you know Vocals and you know background vocals. There's so many layers there. Of course, you have the lead vocal and you have some ad lib, some things that surround that lead vocal during the verse, and so you may have some different things there. But also, on top of that, I want to mention that there are some mixing tricks and things that are used to really call those things to pop. And Of course, we know about your, if you're a mixing and mastering engineer, of course you know about compression, you know about panning, you know about delay, you know about Reverb, you you know about All those different tools, eq, all those those different tools that we use to to cause things to stand out. But you know, recording Something, recording something is one step, but it really goes to the next level when you're talking about the mixing and mastering or, the best to say, the mixing Process. But before we get to that, I just want to mention that there's some great things you can do background vocals, so some ad libs, some things that you can do With the, with the lead vocal, that will really allow it to pop, really allow it to come alive, and then, course, all those things that the mixing at ginger dealer act add to that also. You know, there there are different things, even during the course. Of course, you have the chorus, you can have Things that are in unison, you can have things that are in harmony, and now we have so many plugins, so many things that you can use to put on these vocals. Again, we're going back to the mixing process.

Speaker 1:

Different sounds may not really bring this thing through and this is so important to have an ear to hear this stuff. So when I'm listening to music, of course, again, I'm hearing the Harmonies, I'm hearing the melodies, I'm hearing the ad libs, I'm hearing the fill-ins, I'm hearing all this stuff. I'm hearing the bass line, all the kind, all those kinds of things that are going on. But because I also make some master, you know, I'm also listening as an Engineer and see what things I can learn. I hear this stuff all the time. I mean you, you can have certain words that you, you put on other track and that you can put reverb on in a delay that really stands out. It can be very simple moves, very simple moves.

Speaker 1:

If there's a lot of space, if you want to fill up a lot of space, there's, there's things that you can do. You can take again a word or phrase, you know, add certain things to it so it can really fill up the space in the mix. You know, and it's important to constantly be looking at this stuff. Of course you know, don't go too crazy with the plugins. Of course you know, I kind of you know I get stuff when I, when I think it's important to my workflow, I do get those, do get plugins. But you get a good set of plugins, you're good. You don't need to go crazy with that stuff as long as you know how to use them.

Speaker 1:

But I want to to, you know, caution my new producer's, because my older producers, they already know this. But I want to caution my new producers to really hone in and listen to the different sounds that are going on and to and to really listen in on what type of effects that are going on when somebody's mixing your stuff and it's good to shoot to ask questions and find out. If you're not interested in mixing, it's good to. It's good to find out and ask the engineer what kind of effects they're using and what they're putting on there. Why did they put that reverb there? Why did they put that much compression? Why did they boost in the highest air? Why did they put make sure they had some air there?

Speaker 1:

What you know, so these different moves, you know, is what really brings these different moves, is what really brings the song alive, and that's what engineers do. And so I think that the producer, you know, you know, yeah, the producer should really work closely. Producer and the engineer should really work closely, be best friends, because you can have a great song, but if it's for it, but if the mix falls flat, you know it's no good, it's no good. And so you know, I want you, I want my producers or everyone songwriters, we know, artists, producers really should hone in on this stuff, because it's going to make a difference, even if it's just you communicating to the engineer what it is that you want, Even if it's just that you're not, maybe you're not interested in mixing a mastering, but you want to be able to have that language you know to, to be able to you know, yeah, to be able to communicate effectively. You know, maybe there's a certain section in the song when you want to be turned up with just from a certain section.

Speaker 1:

So you talking about automation, now, all right, and so there are different techniques, different things, and so I saw I would encourage my artists, my producers, you know, my songwriters, to maybe look at a few basic videos on mixing, to just start getting some of the linguo and start, you know, so that you see it, so you can start to understand, you know what's happening, because I think that relationship is really going to cause your music to come alive, and that's what we want when we hand this stuff off to our engineers, we are expecting them to really bring this stuff alive. And so, yes, I just want to encourage you, number one, when you're listening to music, don't just listen for the harmony and melody, bass lines and all that kind of stuff. Listen for the effects. What's on the vocal, what's on the vocals, what's on the background vocals, what's happening? How did you bring that guitar live? Listen to all those things. Start really communicating with your engineer. Start really asking questions too. And then, number three, start looking at some basic videos basic videos on mixing and mixing and start to understand some of the terminology. And I guarantee you that this will take your music to the next level.

Speaker 1:

Because you know, because I mix and master. You know I send my stuff off to get mixed because I'm still working my way in this field, but there are people who have been mixing and mastering a lot longer than me, so I send my stuff to get done. But now I, you know I do it and now I can communicate with them and tell them exactly what I want, which will really bring my music out. The other great thing about that if you are interested in learning mixing and mastering, you learn how to edit. You can edit yourself.

Speaker 1:

You know, sometimes you know the way that I sing personally. You know I do run, do runs. You know there's a certain way that I sing that some people may not be able to understand when they're, when they're mixing your stuff and they have to edit and there are certain notes that may be off, that they may need to fix. But they don't necessarily know how to fix it because they're not used to that style of singing. So I can go in and do this myself, you know what I mean. And that's the other thing to really know and hone in on what key you're in, you know, and what octave you're in what you're singing, so you know, you know how to tell them effectively how to fix something. And all this stuff, I believe, will take your music to the next level. So this, you know, episode is for artists, for producers, songwriters alike, to start to understand this other side of it. You know, I know it just is tempting to just hand it off and just let them do it, but you really want to hone in on these different things?

Speaker 1:
